Onie Ponder, 111, and Leonard McCracken, 107, were born in a time before air travel, interstates and air conditioning.

I worked with picture editor Leslie dela Vega to capture the centenarians personality. I was working in concert with 3 other photographers and going for what Leslie described as an "Avedon" look. I didn't want the lighting to overwhelm the subject matter so I kept it simple.

Here's my favorites from the shoot:

Time also did a nice slide show with all of the images from the story:

Portraits of Centenarians

18 gigapixels of Prague

Absolutely amazing technology at work in this 18 gigapixel 360 pan image of Prague. We ended up at an incredible location in North Miami full of custom cars in various states of restoration. Rick and Triple C were down for shooting with the cars that were torn apart - I was stoked. So many of the shoots I do with hip-hop artists involve Maybachs, Bentlys and Aston Martins so it was killer to be able to use beaters.

We spent a few hours shooting a Rick and Triple C made it easy to make some awesome images. We worked on outdoor location lighting and played around some in CC of P's studio. My strategy for the workshop was to make sure everyone understood the basics and then worked on concepts like hard versus soft light, controlling ambient light and using fill light.

Students had an opportunity to use Profoto gear as well as small strobes. We started out simple with one light and then worked up to edge lights and fill. Here's a few set photos:

© Bob Croslin

© Bob Croslin

And here's a few examples of student work:

© Amelia Phillips Hale

© Dave B

© Dave B

I also was included as a speaker at the APAD Geekfest 2009. The girls have gone back to school and the house/ office is quiet during the day. Productivity is up and screwing around is down. Best of all (hopefully) the highs and lows of the summer are over for awhile.

This summer was punctuated by quite a bit of sadness. We had some good times but they were always cut short with bad news. First, my wife's best friend's mother passed at the end of May. A little more than a month later my wife's uncle passed at the very young age of 62. And then last month while teaching a workshop in SC my wife called to tell me her grandfather had passed. All three died of cancer or complications from cancer treatment. All three were very special to my wife and people I'd come to know through my marriage to her although unfortunately not well enough.

My wife and I are young and have been fortunate to not have attended many funerals and memorials in our lifetimes. Grieving is very foreign to us. Choosing the correct suit or dress or making last minute travel arrangements and asking for bereavement discounts is new to both of us. Saying goodbye for the last time is something we've not had to do often. Stopping to think about our own mortality not once but three times in as many months has been very difficult.

My wife's grandfather had been sick for a few years but seemed to always pull through. He was a stubborn guy who I remember as being the one who always seemed to hide on the back patio with a beer and cigarette. He could be very funny, or so I was told, but I never heard him say much. He always greeted me with a handshake and a "hello Bob," and that was about it. He had been retired for almost as long as I had been alive. I heard my brother-in-law talk about how he'd been a decorated soldier in WW II but no one had ever heard him talk about it. He just seemed to sit back and take it all in.

After getting word of his passing my wife was told there would be a military funeral but we weren't sure where. When we arrived in VA we were told the funeral would be in Quantico and it would be with full military honors. Earning a Silver Star and three bronze stars warranted a burial in Arlington but Quantico was his request. No one knows what he did to earn those medals as he never talked about the war.

I offered to photograph the military service and my father-in-law accepted the offer. I hadn't photographed a funeral since my days working in newspapers and it was something I never had the stomach for. I don't really think of myself as a documentary photographer unless I'm documenting something weird as a portrait series. I was very nervous I would screw something up and disappoint my father-in-law, wife and the rest of her family. I was afraid. I know I shouldn't have been as photography is second nature to me but my fear of letting others down always seems to get the best of me.

Elizabeth McGee is presented with the flag from her husband James Bruce Mcgee Sr's coffin

I guess the big take away from this summer of ups and downs is we all have to tackle our fears. All things to be overcome.

Summer fears behind me - bring on Fall.

Making A Splash

I was recently approached by Bay art director Suzette Moyer with an idea she had to throw drinks at women in expensive clothes. I photographed Kellen for ESPN's fantasy draft issue in Tampa. Kellen was great and had us cracking up during the shoot. Best of all he gave us nearly an hour he was having such a good time even though I was told he was on a tight schedule and would only be available for 30 minutes. I love it when that happens.

Here's what ran

And this is an out take of him doing his best "thinker." This was the fourth time I've photographed John and he was a pro as usual. My team and I had to produce images for the cover of MF and an inside spread. I finally was able to see and photograph Cena go through his work out routine and it was incredible. At one point he was squating 500 lbs and he started cracking up when I was shooting him like it was no big deal. Here's the tears:

Thanks goes to MF Design Director Yvette Francis who was on hand to make sure the show ran smoothly as well as Stylist Tammara Kohler and Groomer Suzin Moon who made Cena look like the super star he is. I hung out with them last Labor Day and documented their headlining gig at the "Bonnaroo of barbershop" in Orlando. Sean, Shawn, Cory and Patrick are great guys that don't really fit in with the older barbershop scene and have caused some controversy amid the old school. When you think of barbershop quartets young female groupies, boy band good looks and subversive behavior don't normally come to mind but OC Times inspires it all.

Here's what the spreads look like.

I shot a series of portraits with the guys that didn't make the magazine. Price ended up being the runner-up. Now that the issue has run I thought I'd talk about the concept behind the shot and how it was pulled off.

First, here's what ran.

The idea was to have David write the word NEXT and I immediately started researching different ways of painting with light with pen lights, flash lights, etc. I'm sure everyone has seen the Sprint commercials with people painting all sorts of things with lights. It looks easy. It's not.

I went about researching and then buying every pen and LED light I could find. I found a light that worked the best and then gelled it red. My wife and I tested them with mixed results. How hard could it be to write a word in space during a 10 sec exposure? First, you have to write the word backwards. Second, you have to figure out a way to either connect the letters or turn the light on and off in order to not contaminate the word with squiggly lines. Third, you have to get the motion of writing the word down. Not easy. Add to all this that your subject is an MLB pitcher who is playing in the first game of the ALCS and you've got a challenge on your hands.

Fortunately, David Price turns out to be a really nice guy. He gave my crew and I about 90 min's to get the images we needed and he was excited to try to write the word NEXT. Actually, he attacked the task like he would a batter during a game.

Here's one of Price's attempts:

David was a really good sport about the whole thing and he would run to see the result every time we made an exposure. We realized pretty quickly we'd have to produce the effect in post but it was still fun trying something new.

Happy New Year (and some cool news)

I know a lot of people hated 2008 but I'm a little sad to see it go. It was a good year for me. My business grew by leaps and bounds and I worked on some killer stuff. I also started a personal project that I can't wait to jump on in 2009.

Something I'm really looking forward to (this is the news part btw) is that I'll be teaching a lighting workshop at the Charleston Center for Photography in August! Center for Photography Director Stacey Pearsall asked me if I was interested a few months ago and she pinned me down for August 10-12. I met Stacey at the EAW XX workshop back in 2007 when we worked together on the black team. Stacey and her husband Andy are both kick-ass photogs in their own right and I'm honored Stacey thought of me to teach at the Center.

Here's the important stuff:

The Power of Light with yours truly!
Three days of photography, studio and location lighting in Charleston, SC! My tastes in music tend to be, well, a little weird. My wife thinks I'm a music snob. Sean Daly makes fun of me for listening to indie crap. My daughter just thinks I'm mental.

I will rock out to Metallica or Motely Crue one minute and then listen to Nada Surf or the Smiths the next. I'll even throw in some of my daughter's Pink or Kelly Clarkson for good measure. The only thing I'm as passionate about besides photography is music.

So, since I look forward to the music lists every year I thought I'd post mine for 2008:

MGMT - Oracular Spectacular: I heard the track "Kids" while on vacation in Seattle (thank you KEXP!) and couldn't get it out of my head. The whole album is amazing.

Okkervil River - Stage Names: "Unless it Kick's" makes me play air guitar in the car and put other drivers in danger. O.R. sound like the most ass-kicking, girl-getting, mod-hair-wearing bunch of dudes ever.

Red Fang - Tour E.P. 2: Red Fang will rock your frickin' face off. They seriously will. I'm not kidding. The video for Prehistoric Dog is classic.

Kings of Leon - Only by Night: I'm really not a big fan of K of L but "Sex on Fire" is radio rock at it's finest - except good luck finding it on the radio. Use Somebody makes me want to move my ass as well.

The Airborne Toxic Event - The Airborne Toxic Event: Can this be called "post-emo"? Smart song writing with just a little bit of cheesy emotion. "Sometime Around Midnight" expresses every guy's worst nightmare of seeing his ex in a bar with another guy and freaking out. The whole album hits the right notes in that Killers "Hot Fuss" kind of way.

The Gaslight Anthem - The '59 Sound: A fun album to listen to. Bluesy without being too derivative. Serious sing-a-long stuff.

The Hold Steady - Stay Positive: The smartest band you've probably never heard of. The fourth album from the best bar band playing today. Only Craig Finn could squeeze the word "sequestered" in a chorus.

Death Cab For Cutie - Narrow Stairs: Seattle's "old faithful." Another solid album that is an interesting listen months after the first time you hear it. One of the tracks will pop up in a shuffle mix on my ipod and I'll think "who's this, I really like this song?!"

Nada Surf - Lucky: I love Nada Surf. There, I said it. Their music makes me smile when I feel like crap. I sing/ scream Nada's songs in my car. I was lucky (no pun intended) enough to see them live this year and danced my ass off. "Weightless" makes me stop whatever I'm doing and sing. Did I say I love these guys?

M83 - Saturdays=Youth: Just bought this and just like "Before The Dawn Heals Us" I'm amazed humans can make music that sounds like this. Wow. Just, wow.

Sigur Ros - Heima: I'm including the movie and the soundtracks (yes, plural). I know the music was released over the last 10 years but the movie is new and the soundtrack is like an amazing best of. If you have not seen this documentary make sure you do. The combination of the landscapes of Iceland with the music of Sigur Ros will blow your mind.

Here's 3 more that were 2007 releases but I'm still listening to them in 2008:

The National - Boxer: Alligator is still my favorite but this album gives it a run for it's money.

Parts and Labor - Mapmaker: They sort of remind me of D-Plan. "Fractured Skies" makes me want to sprint out the front door and keep running until I collapse. In a totally good way.

Radiohead - In Rainbows: My first listen I wasn't a huge fan of this album but then I watched the Scotch Mist live show they did online and "got it." Also another show I saw in 2008.

Have a Happy Holiday and see you all next year - or maybe before. :)

Photo requests from the delusional

In my past life I worked as a picture editor for a publication that shall go nameless. It was the most thankless job I've ever worked - and I'm comparing it against my previous jobs as a pizza delivery guy, gas station attendant and DJ at a roller skating rink.

On an almost daily basis I would get the most pie-in-the-sky photo requests generally of the same variation on theme - color images of sporting events that were only photographed in black and white. The other request was for free images of the most important events in sports history. Think Neil Liefer's Muhammad Ali standing over Sonny Liston and some word editor demanding I find it royalty free!

My answer almost always came after 30 min's of phone calls and archive searches (largely done in a CYA fashion) that the requested image did not exist or was going to cost us 10 million gazillion dollars.

Indignant looks from the requester always followed but not first without some crack about how useless I was as well as the photo dept I represented. Like I said, thankless.

So, it made me smile that someone took this idea of the delusional requests for photos from non-visual people and turned it into an awesome little short movie. At least someone was able to have fun while suffering the fools.

David Price for ESPN

A few weeks back - well, the first game of the ALCS actually - I photographed David Price for ESPN the magazine. Price was a heavily scouted and a first-round draft pick for the TB Rays. If you watched any of the 2008 WS he was hyped as the Rays' secret weapon.

I've photographed a lot of athletes over the years and Price is by far one of the nicest and most down-to-earth pros I've ever met. He gave us more than 2 hours to shoot stills and video and had fun throughout.

Here's the video ESPN did on the shoot. Don't blink or you might miss me!

I'll post some out takes and talk about the concept for the shoot when the magazine hits the stands next week. USF defensive end George Selvie is submitting himself to the diet from hell. He literally eats several times his normal caloric intake in able to bulk himself up. ESPN writer Wright Thompson decided to go bite-for-bite with Selvie - something that he later regretted.

My job was to photograph Selvie in the studio with a range of props. Everything from a football to BMI calipers to a nice frosty protein shake. We quickly figured out George hates the shakes. The magazine played off that theme.

For some of the shots I was able to involve George's mom and in the end I was able to make a nice image for the two of them as well.

Selvie's a great guy. I then used a ring for fill from the front.

DJ Khaled shoot in Miami

I recently shot for NYC-based Koch records with Miami producer DJ Khaled for his recently released album "We Global." He and his family were awesome - couldn't have asked for better subjects.

The concept was to show how far Earnest and his family have come after signing a multi-million dollar contract with the Bucs. At one point Earnest was living out of hotel rooms and it looked like his career might be over when he was cut from the Bucs back in 2003 due to an injury.

I tried to keep things simple and let Earnest and his family just have fun. ESPN needed a strong image to go with the seriousness of the story and shot Earnest in several different locations. Some of you might recall that she was the teenager in Lakeland beaten by a group of girls who videotaped the event in order to upload it to Youtube. When People originally called me for the shoot I was told Tori would not allow anyone to photograph her and that I would just be photographing her parents. The shoot with Tori's parents went great and even though Tori stuck to her guns I thought I had a selection of nice images. My assistant and I packed up and left only to get a call from the reporter to turn around - Tori had changed her mind.

I had already spent more than 3 hours photographing Tori's folks and it was close to 10 pm. I knew I'd have to work quick in case Tori got cold feet and I knew I needed to keep my lighting to a minimum.

Working in the Lindsay's living room, I went for the safe shot of her surrounded by her parents. I wanted her to feel comfortable and not overwhelmed by my lights. Now, I'll be honest - I love to set up lights just to see what I can do with them. The more heads the better. As Clay McBride commented about my work recently, "Bob REALLY likes his lights!" In this case I decided to go with one light and.... wait for it.... an UMBRELLA!

Seriously. Total lighting 101 stuff. Not sexy at all. But, really practical.

I wanted nice soft even light. Honestly, I wanted something safe in case Tori bolted after the first frame. This is what I shot:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_9eo3_a2nXho/SGxJ92axHWI/AAAAAAAAAA4/1FGp20i-Wv8/s400/tori_01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5218627395144195426" />

Like I said, safe stuff. After a few minutes I could tell Tori was comfortable and wasn't going to sprint from the room. She's a really cool kid who's way more mature than I was at 16. I photographed her alone on the couch but I just wasn't feeling it. I wanted to do something that was dark and conveyed the mood of the story. Something that was mine.

In the same confined space, I sat Tori on a chair and ditched the umbrella. I went with my favorite softbox - a 3 foot Profoto octabank with a fabric grid. The grid is the modifier to pay attention to. Without the grid, light would spill and bounce all over the white walls producing soft mushy light. With the grid I can control exactly where the light goes and keep it off the big wall right next to her. After a test I realized the light was a little too moody and Rembrandt looking so I opened up the shadow by about a stop and a half with a silver collapsible reflector. Easy stuff. This is what I was able to produce and what People ran as a full page bleed:

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_9eo3_a2nXho/SGxLs5dTSrI/AAAAAAAAABA/ikk3h_a19Fk/s400/tori_02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5218629302925609650" />

One light - two very different looks. Accomplished with one head, one umbrella, one small octabank and a reflector.

Sometimes simple really is better.

Here's a link to the People layout on the Aurora Select news blog

Charlie Manuel shot for Philadelphia Magazine

Back in March I photographed Phillies manager Charlie Manuel for Philly Magazine. The concept was to photograph Charlie in a way that called attention to him not so much as the manager of Phillies but as a guy who is often underestimated. Philly mag specifically wanted several shots of Manuel "on set" as well as some traditional portraits.

Here's a movie Robert Browman put together from the shoot with his 5D and an interval timer:

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v3.nonxt5.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D7115e5dee5deacc8%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1330333562%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3D82187375A94BD6B365860D55DCADEE48C20516F4.84FA1A55DFA2BC07AFDB7143267AA3FB1F65A29B%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D7115e5dee5deacc8%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DGov4-V6U81PCWnEtzCKSjNwnAnc&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

I had a few decisions to make regarding lights to use for this shoot. I would normally use a Profoto 3' octabank or I'll go with a smaller beauty dish type of reflector when shooting 1/2 and 1/4 shots. Since the wind was cranking I ruled the soft octabank out and went with a beauty dish. A beauty dish produces a soft yet directionally focused light.

I had the good sense to rent a 6' x 6' frame with a bleached white muslin because setting up a paper seamless would have been an exercise in futility. I then lit the backdrop with two lights to get an even white. Pretty simple stuff.

You'll see 2 additional lights in the video - 1 medium softbox backed off for fill on Charlie and another off to the far left for fill on stylist Michelle. You'll also see that at one point we had a beauty dish on a boom to light the top of Charlie's head but considering he doesn't have much hair (I hadn't seen him without a hat on so I had no clue) I was worried I'd blow his head out.

The ambient light changed drastically from when we originally set up at 1:30 to when Charlie showed up at 5:30 so I had Brow hold a light panel up to shade Charlie from the sun.

Here's some images of what the set looked like:

And how it ran in the magazine:

W Magazine

Some of you might find it hard to believe but I'm a subscriber to W Magazine.
